Hearing the Voice of God – Sunday 29 January 2012

Last week we covered that fact that God speaks to us. He wants to speak to us because He wants to enter into a relationship with us where there is 2-way communication.  The issue is not that He doesn’t speak, but that we don’t listen, or we don’t hear His voice or we don’t understand because His voice is choked up in the the midst of everything else that might be happening in our world.

Ever had the feeling that God might be speaking to you, or steering you in a particular direction but you are not sure. His voice seems a little mirky in the mix with all other voices in the world.

In this message, I explored 7 simple but practical ways that I use to filter out all other voices and be absolutely sure that what I’m hearing is God’s voice (His leading and guiding).

HEARING THE VOICE OF GOD – in this message Ps Jorge uses illustrations from the animated movie, “Horton Hears a Who”, to explore this very important theme – hearing the voice of God.

Does God speak to people? Yes He does! We often think that He is not because:

  1. We are not listening, or
  2. We are listening but hearing, or
  3. We are hearing but not understanding.

2012 Your Jubilee Year

Many people say, “I just want to be happy”. However, happiness is just a feeling that swings one way or another according to external factors and circumstances.  Hence, depending on what is happening in my world, I may feel happy one day but sad on another day.

So what people really mean when they say that they want to be happy, is that they want a sense of life fulfilment and satisfaction and enjoyment.  That’s something that comes from the inside and is not so much influenced by outside factors.  I may feel sad today but I can still have a deep sense of life satisfaction.  That is the very thing that Jesus said He came to give us.  In fact, most people can spend their whole life trying to find, or rather, fill that void.  But Jesus made it clear that He is the only One that can totally and perfectly fill that void.

In my hand written message below I explore this issue, unpackage what the Bible says and how it relates to our lives.  Feel free to comment or ask any questions.

Sermon Calendar – 2012

Why bother with a sermon calendar?

Some people say that such a thing takes away the power of the working of the Holy Spirit. I say the opposite is true. The Bible says, “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and He will establish your plans.” (Proverbs 16:3). In other words, if you fail to plan you plan to fail.

Here are some obvious advantages of planing the sermons months ahead:

  1. Greater balance and strategy to the sermons over the 12 months period – able to be strategic about your sermons, identify the big days when most visitors come and prepare an appropriate message.
  2. Greater creativity – ability to add and enhance the sermons with multi-media, illustrations and stories.
  3. The Holy Spirit – the working of the Holy Spirit meshes into the message in ample advance time as well as on the day.
  4. Maximum results – the combination of 1, 2 and 3 above, together with a clear vision and culture. This will most definitely maximise results.
  5. Lower stress levels for the senior pastor – last but not least. Nothing worst than having no idea of what to preach about the night before.
The strategy I like to adopt is simple:
  1. Identify the big days. These are the days when we expect the largest number of people especially first time attenders.
  2. Use the big days to launch “attractive” sermon series. These should be messages that are appealing to the un-churched. Amongst my leaders I often call these sermon series as “hook” series. Jesus said, “follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19). We want to see first time attenders come back. So the idea is to maximise the retention of first-time attenders.
  3. Balance the year with “teaching” and “balance” sermon series.
With those thoughts in mind, here is my own sermon calendar for 2012.
